Privacy policy for Better Reading

This policy describes the published feature set of Better Reading: Word Practice. Child profiles, learning progress, settings and custom word lists remain local to the device being used.

Translation notice

This English translation is provided for convenience. If there are any discrepancies, the German version is authoritative.

2. Principle: local processing

The core features of Better Reading work without an internet connection. There is no registration or sign-in, no server-side parent, teacher or school accounts and no central profile database. AmoSystems receives neither child profiles nor learning progress or custom word lists.

App Store privacy disclosure

On 20 August 2026, the public App Store page states “Data Not Collected”. This means that AmoSystems receives no data through its own servers or embedded SDKs. Data processed locally, by an Apple system service or directly between devices is nevertheless described transparently in this policy.

3. Local profiles and learning progress

Adults can create multiple local child profiles on one device. In particular, the following information may be processed in the app’s protected storage:

  • first name or a freely chosen profile name, profile identifier and avatar,
  • points, practice days, practice duration, achievements and collectible pictures,
  • correctly and incorrectly answered words and individual word statistics,
  • progress through word worlds and Nox’s Book Journey,
  • app, game, learning and display settings and onboarding status, and
  • imported custom word lists, categories and hints.

This information is not transmitted to AmoSystems. Custom CSV word lists are imported via Apple’s file picker; this does not require general access to photos or files.

Types of dataLocal profiles, learning progress, settings and optionally imported word lists
PurposePersonalisation, exercise control, progress display and provision of custom content
CollectionWhen a profile is created, exercises are used or a CSV file is deliberately imported
Processing and recipientsLocal only; no recipients at AmoSystems or third parties
RetentionUntil the relevant data is deleted or reset, or the app is removed
Profile associationLearning progress is linked to the selected local profile; custom word lists remain local to the device
Sharing, advertising or trackingNone
DeletionIn the parent area; custom word lists are deleted separately

4. Microphone, speech recognition and audio

In the “Speak the word” game mode, Better Reading records a short spoken answer through the microphone after you have given permission. Apple’s speech-recognition service is used where possible. Audio data may be transmitted to Apple for processing. If the service is not available and the device supports local speech recognition, processing may take place directly on the device.

Better Reading uses the recognition result only to compare the spoken answer with the target word. The app does not permanently store the voice recording or recognised text, does not associate this data with a child profile and does not use it for advertising, analytics or tracking. Nothing is transmitted to AmoSystems servers.

Processing by Apple is governed by Apple’s information about Siri, Dictation & Privacy ↗. Apple explains that audio data from apps permitted to use speech recognition may be sent to Apple.

Microphone and speech-recognition permissions can be withdrawn at any time under “Settings → Privacy & Security”. Mobile data can be disabled under “Settings → Mobile Service → Better Reading”. Online speech recognition will then use Wi-Fi only; without an internet connection, recognition is available only if the device supports local speech recognition. Apple describes this setting in its mobile-data support article ↗.

Processing by AppleIn accordance with Apple’s privacy terms

Read-aloud and dictation features only play audio and do not record a voice.

5. Duels on the local network

For a duel between devices on the same local network, Better Reading uses Apple’s MultipeerConnectivity and Bonjour features. Nearby devices can identify one another as potential players. Once connected, player name and avatar, game configuration, the words used, readiness and game status, answer results, response times and round and final results are encrypted and transmitted directly between the connected devices in accordance with the Apple system framework.

This data is not routed through AmoSystems servers and is not accessible to AmoSystems. Network data exists only for the duration of the connection or game round. The only recipient is the deliberately connected other device; the data is not used for advertising, analytics or tracking.

6. Permissions and access not used

Depending on the selected feature, the app may ask for access to the microphone, speech recognition and the local network. Bonjour is used solely to discover other devices for local duels.

Better Reading does not use camera, photo, contacts, calendars, location, HealthKit, notification or tracking permission. Bluetooth audio may be used through Apple’s normal audio output; the app does not request general Bluetooth data access.

7. Service providers and diagnostic data

Better Reading contains no third-party SDKs and uses no analytics, advertising, cloud, AI or crash-reporting services. There is no iCloud or CloudKit sync and no proprietary backend server. Only Apple system frameworks are used, including for the interface, audio, speech recognition and local network connections.

Depending on personal system settings, Apple may process system diagnostics or crash reports and make them available through its developer services. The app contains no proprietary analytics or crash-reporting component. A support message voluntarily sent through the Mail app is not stored within Better Reading and is also subject to the terms of the email providers involved.

Although Better Reading does not use iCloud or CloudKit syncing, local app data may form part of an Apple device or iCloud backup depending on personal device settings. Management and deletion of such backups are governed by the settings of the relevant Apple account.

8. Retention and deletion

  • Profiles and learning progress remain stored until the profile or app is deleted.
  • Settings remain stored until they are changed, reset or the app is removed.
  • Custom word lists remain stored until they are individually deleted or the app is removed.
  • Temporary voice recordings and recognised text are discarded after evaluation.
  • Data for a network duel exists only for the duration of the connection or game round.

Individual profiles and their statistics can be deleted in the protected parent area. “Delete all users & statistics” resets the local profile data and creates a local initial profile again where needed. Custom word lists are deleted separately. Removing the app deletes all data from its local storage. Because no online accounts exist, no server-side account deletion is required.

9. Protection of children

Better Reading is an educational app primarily intended for children of primary-school age. The app is not currently offered in Apple’s “Made for Kids” category. Personalised advertising, tracking, publicly visible profiles, chats and open communication with unknown people are not part of the app. Profile, statistics and word-list management features are located in the local parent area.

10. Your rights and contact

Where personal data is processed in connection with a support enquiry, data subjects may, subject to the statutory requirements, request access, rectification, erasure, restriction, data portability or object to processing. There is also a right to lodge a complaint with a competent data-protection supervisory authority.

Questions can be sent by email to info@fabianamos.com or through app support. Support enquiries are generally deleted twelve months after final resolution. They are retained longer only where required by law or to safeguard legal claims.
