Privacy policy for Practify

Practify 1.7 is offline-first. Scores, settings and practice data are generally stored on the iPhone or iPad. The app contains no advertising or tracking and does not require a Practify account. Data is transmitted only when a feature that needs it is deliberately selected.

Translation notice

This English translation is provided for convenience. If there are any discrepancies, the German version is authoritative.

2. Scope and core principle

This policy describes the published feature set of Practify. No AmoSystems or Practify account is required. Core features such as the score library, practice, local profiles and progress can be used without an internet connection.

Data is transmitted only when a feature is explicitly selected. These features include optional family sharing through Apple iCloud or CloudKit, deliberately started optical score recognition, catalogue search, downloads, and exports through the iOS share sheet.

3. Data processed locally

  • settings and goals: app configuration, reminders, display and personal practice goals;
  • practice sessions: active time, correct and incorrect notes, hand, tempo, practice days and progress;
  • scores: imported MusicXML files, optionally selected source pages and recognition information;
  • profiles: profile name, role, goals and separate practice progress; a parent PIN is stored only as a salted verification value in the device-bound Keychain;
  • connections: settings for MIDI devices, a local Mac service or an explicitly configured recognition service; access tokens are stored in the Keychain.

Data remains until it is changed or deleted in the app or until the app is uninstalled. Scores, local practice histories, profiles and saved connections can be removed individually within the app.

4. Microphone, MIDI, camera and photos

During normal practice, Practify analyses acoustically played piano notes locally through the microphone. No audio file is created automatically or transmitted to AmoSystems. Only an explicitly started diagnostic session in Recognition Lab creates a local WAV file; it is exported solely after a further deliberate choice.

MIDI or Bluetooth events are processed locally during the session to recognise played notes. Camera and selected photos are used only when the user photographs or imports their own score pages.

5. Optional score recognition

Optical recognition of the user’s own score pages can use a self-hosted Practify Mac service on the local network or an explicitly configured external service. Selected pages are transmitted only after the connection has been set up and recognition has been started. The recognition result is then stored in the local library.

With a local Mac service, data remains within the user’s network and local files are managed on that Mac. With an external service, score pages, technical job data and the recognition result may be processed by the operator identified during setup. The information provided for that connection governs the operator, server location and deletion. A saved connection and its token can be removed in Practify.

6. Optional family sharing through Apple CloudKit

Protected profiles remain local by default. Only after a family share has been deliberately configured are selected profile names, roles and practice summaries synchronised through Apple iCloud or CloudKit with specifically invited people. Recipients are Apple as the CloudKit provider and those invited people. Practify does not sell this data or use it for advertising or tracking.

A share can be ended in Practify or iCloud and a local profile can be deleted. Uninstalling the app removes local app data. Previously exported recipient copies and information in device or iCloud backups are governed by the relevant Apple Account settings and retention rules.

7. Catalogue search, downloads and sharing

External score catalogues are searched only after user action. RISM receives symbolic note sequences, but no score photographs. When a score is downloaded, the selected source website receives the technically necessary connection data. MusicXML and diagnostic packages are passed to a chosen service or recipient only through Apple’s system share sheet.

8. Permissions and notifications

Practify may request access to the microphone, camera, selected photos, Bluetooth, local network and notifications. iOS asks for each permission only when it is first needed. Permission can be withdrawn at any time under “Settings → Apps → Practify”; the related feature will then be unavailable or limited.

Optional practice reminders are scheduled locally. If family sharing is active, CloudKit may use silent system notifications to update shared information.

9. Advertising, tracking, analytics and the App Store

Practify contains no advertising, app tracking, proprietary analytics or crash SDK. AmoSystems receives no automatic usage or diagnostic data from normal practice. Depending on App Store, diagnostics, iCloud and device settings, Apple may process its own connection, purchase, diagnostic or account data; Apple’s privacy information applies.

Apple’s “Data Not Collected” label refers to the collection disclosed in the App Store by the provider and integrated third parties. It does not mean that no personal settings are processed on the device or that deliberately enabled iCloud, recognition, search and export features operate without data transmission.

10. Support and your rights

The app itself does not transmit a support request. Anyone contacting Practify support by email should not send private access codes, server tokens or unnecessary personal information. The processing and retention of contact enquiries is described in the general website privacy information.

Where AmoSystems processes personal data in connection with an enquiry, data subjects may, subject to statutory requirements, request access, rectification, erasure, restriction or portability, or object to processing. There is also a right to lodge a complaint with a competent data-protection supervisory authority.
