Practify support

Practify supports focused piano practice with your own scores, MIDI or microphone recognition, and locally stored progress. This page covers imports, recognition, connections, permissions, family profiles, and local data.

Translation notice

This English translation is provided for convenience. If there are any discrepancies, the German version is authoritative.

Requirements

  • iPhone or iPad with iOS or iPadOS 26.0 or later,
  • for MIDI feedback, a compatible MIDI keyboard connected through Bluetooth MIDI or a cable,
  • for acoustic feedback, microphone permission and a reasonably quiet environment,
  • for optional optical recognition, your own Practify Mac service on the local network or an explicitly configured external service,
  • for family sharing, iCloud or CloudKit and an invitation to the intended person.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add my own sheet music?

Open “Your Music” and tap the plus button. You can import MusicXML or MXL, photograph your own score pages, choose images or PDFs and, if configured, start recognition. Review automatically recognized measures before practising.

Why does automatic score recognition not start?

Optical recognition does not run entirely on the iPhone or iPad. Set up a local Mac service under “More → Score Recognition” or connect an approved external service. Check the connection and try again. MusicXML can be imported directly without a recognition service.

How do I connect a MIDI keyboard?

Enable Bluetooth or MIDI on the instrument, open Practice Input and choose “Pair Bluetooth MIDI” if a known device does not reconnect automatically. For cable connections, iOS must recognise the keyboard as a MIDI input. If necessary, close other MIDI apps and restart the keyboard and Practify.

Microphone recognition is unreliable. What can I do?

Check microphone permission, move the device closer to the instrument, reduce speech and background noise, and play individual notes clearly. MIDI usually provides the clearest reference for digital keyboards.

Are my recordings stored?

During normal practice, Practify analyses microphone input locally and does not create an audio file. Only an explicitly started diagnostic session in Recognition Lab creates a WAV file. You decide whether and with whom to share the diagnostic package.

How do family profiles work?

Protected adult and child profiles on one device can keep goals and progress separate. Selected summaries can optionally be shared with invited people through Apple iCloud or CloudKit. Without sharing, profile data remains local.

How do I delete data?

Delete individual scores from “Your Music”. Settings let you remove local practice history and profiles and forget a Mac or external recognition service. End a family share in Practify or iCloud as well. Deleting the app removes its local container, but not copies previously exported to other recipients.

How do I change or revoke permissions?

Open “Settings → Apps → Practify”. You can allow or revoke microphone, camera, photos, Bluetooth, local-network and notification access. Disabling a permission limits the related feature.

Can I share scores?

Yes. Practify can export MusicXML through the iOS share sheet. The file is passed to the selected recipient or service only after you choose it explicitly.

Do I need an account or subscription?

No Practify or AmoSystems account is required. The app is a paid one-time purchase with no in-app subscription. Optional iCloud family sharing requires an Apple ID with iCloud.

Troubleshooting

  1. Confirm that iOS or iPadOS and Practify are up to date.
  2. Fully close Practify and open it again.
  3. Check the required permission in iOS Settings.
  4. For MIDI issues, restart the keyboard and Bluetooth and close competing MIDI apps.
  5. For a local Mac service, make sure the Mac and iPhone or iPad use the same network and that the service is shown as reachable.
  6. For an external service, check the internet connection, invitation expiry and connection status. Never publish access tokens.
  7. Re-import MusicXML if the problem affects only one score.
