How do I start a game?
Choose New game, a mode and one of the four variants. For a computer game, select a difficulty from 1 to 5 below the variants. New players start at level 1. Your last confirmed level is remembered for future games.
How easy is level 1?
The computer deliberately plays imperfectly at this level. It can overlook opportunities to form a mill and miss threats from its opponent. It can still find good moves and win; the outcome is not predetermined.
How do hints and appearance settings work?
Tap Hint to show a suggested move on the board; tap again to hide it. More → Appearance lets you adjust legal targets, last-move highlights, stone animations and the accent colour. Hints are calculated independently of the beginner opponent’s deliberate mistakes.
How can I play with another person?
Two players lets you take turns on the same device. For two devices, connect both to the same Wi-Fi network, allow local network access for Muehlenstein and choose New game → Wi-Fi on each device. One person hosts; the other finds the game and sends an invitation. The host accepts it. No pairing code or account is needed. Both devices need a version that supports Wi-Fi play; if you have problems, update both to the same version.
Why can’t I find the other game?
Check that both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and allow local network access. Guest networks with device isolation, VPNs or a firewall may prevent a connection. The app’s connection help links to Settings. An internet connection alone does not replace a shared local network.
What happens if the connection is interrupted?
The board pauses. Open the same saved game on both devices and use Connection → Reconnect if needed. If the game has been replaced on either device or the app has been deleted, that shared game cannot be resumed with it.
Are hints and undo available over Wi-Fi?
No. Computer hints and unilateral undo are disabled in network games. Appearance settings, move history and rules remain available.
Where is my game saved?
The current game is saved automatically on your device. Starting a new game replaces the previous save. Muehlenstein has no cloud-sync service of its own. Device backups depend on your Apple settings.
Which languages and devices are supported?
Muehlenstein runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 18 or later. It includes English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Your iOS language settings determine the app language.
Is there a subscription or internet play?
The app is a one-time purchase without subscriptions, in-app purchases or advertising. Internet games and public matchmaking are not included.
Origins and source code
Muehlenstein is an independent app by AmoSystems, not an official Sanmill release. Its native SwiftUI interface, visual design and integration were developed for Muehlenstein. Rules, search algorithms and classic opening data come from Sanmill by calcitem and the Sanmill contributors.
The app is licensed under GNU AGPL v3 or later. Complete source code, build instructions and license notices are publicly available at https://github.com/MrFam0s/Muehlenstein. Original license and author notices are preserved. Full license texts are also included offline in the app.
